The shelter is empty as of 12/22/14. All animals have been placed in the care of many amazing rescue groups; some of those animals have been permanently adopted!
Stray or lost animals are from towns still contracted with HRAS are being taken to Monmouth County SPCA or, if needed to Garden State Vetererinary Hospital (overnight only) in Iselin.

What volunteers found when they came to the shelter on 11-7.

Carmel the puppy was emaciated when he came to HRAS. Instead of taking him to the vet the director decided to care for him herself. The dog died from starvation.

The SPCA and Department of Health 'raid' the shelter in an unannounced inspection. 11-13-14

Two dogs and four cats were removed for emergency medical care. One cat died en route to the vet and the other was humanely euthanized.

NJ SPCA speaks to the press and answers some question. As of 11-14 the investigation is ongoing. The Capt said, 'I was disturbed by what I saw."

HRAS is given an unsatisfactory rating by the Department of Health. The shelter is quarantined until there is no trace of disease.

During the investigation and ACO attempted to bring in 6 cats. The building was quarantined and the cats were picked up by the Woodbridge shelter at the request of the NJ SPCA. The cats were immediately vaccinated, treated for fleas and internal parasites. At the end of their 7 day hold they will be put up for adoption.
